Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft is one of the richest person in the whole world. With a valuation of more than 1 trillion dollars, Microsoft has become the third US company to hit 1 Trillion dollars milestone, only behind Apple and Amazon. But even after all of the achieved success, Bill Gates regrets not being able to do one thing during his career. He regrets not being able to develop Android within Microsoft.
Bill Gates regrets not being able to recreate Android in Microsoft
Android, as we all know, is a mobile operating system owned by Google which has taken the smartphone market by storm. As on May 2019, Android comprised of around three quarters (75.27%) of the Smartphone OS market. With these impressive statistics, android is the most popular Mobile Operating System.
Google earn around $24.8 Billion through transactions made in Google Playstore in 2018. Google also earns substantial amount of money through advertising upon the Android Smartphones. Android has played a significant role in the success of Google by churning out billions of dollars.
Bill Gates talked about his career’s biggest regret during an interview given to Julia Hartz at VC Firm Global Village. He stated that-
“In the software world, particularly for platforms, these are winner-take-all markets. So the greatest mistake ever is whatever mismanagement I engaged in that caused Microsoft not to be what Android is. That is, Android is the standard non-Apple phone platform. That was a natural thing for Microsoft to win.
“Gates avowed that he and the management of Microsoft somehow mismanaged their mobile OS segment. Due to the mismanagement Google was able to enter the Mobile market before Microsoft in the year 2008. Microsoft later entered the Smartphone market with the Windows Mobile OS in the year 2010, about 3 years after the launch of Android. By the time Windows Mobile OS was launched, Google’s Android figured out the whole Mobile Market. In addition, Microsoft also rushed a bit in developing their Mobile OS which resulted in compromise with OS functionality. Eventually, with time people started losing interest in the Windows Mobile OS and therefore it was eventually shutdown by Microsoft on October, 2017.
Bill Gates regrets not being able to create a successful android like OS for rivaling iOS, even after having all the money and resources for creating one. Had Microsoft knew the potential and scope of mobile OS on the right time, then its mobile OS would have fared well in the Smartphone market. If this would have been the case, then the current scenario would have been completely different for both Microsoft and Google.
The failure of Windows Mobile OS highlights the importance of the work of the top level management of any company, which should be far-sighted and adaptive for assuring its success. Any wrong decision of the management can cost the company millions of dollars or (like in this case) can affect the future prospects of the company.
Though Microsoft’s venture into the mobile market was not a successful one, Bill Gates is satisfied that Microsoft is still doing great in the Computer Hardware and Software market, by saying Microsoft is still a “very strong” company.
